Moving Image Arts (MIA) is an exciting new subject that has been introduced to post-primary schools throughout Northern Ireland.
Some local Primary Schools had identified access to higher-level ICT facilities as an issue and their lack of expertise in this curriculum area.
Ashfield Boys High School hosted a series of four-week courses for Year 6 classes from Avoniel, St Matthews, Victoria Park, Knocknagoney, Nettlefield and Elmgrove primary schools. In pairs the children created a short animated movie on the curriculum theme “The World Around Us”. In Year 1 of the programme the movies were showcased at Ashfield Boys end of year Art Exhibition and in Year 2 we had a celebration event on Skainos.
The programme built skills for the pupils and teachers involved and introduced Year 6’s to the post-primary environment; helping with transition. In addition each school was provided with two iPads and offered one day’s IT consultancy to support training, website development etc. according to need.
A total of 337 Year 6 pupils benefitted from tyhe programme and 26 staff from the schools involved.
